WIRE & METALS PROCESSING
Continuous processes, continuous data
Drawing, patenting, plating and finishing are continuous processes running around the clock, where quality is determined by conditions that change minute to minute and a problem discovered at the end of the line may have started hours earlier and several stages back. Machines come from different vendors and different decades. The data that would explain a quality excursion usually exists somewhere in a PLC — it just was never captured, contextualised or kept.
What these plants are up against
A mixed automation estate
Lines assembled over decades rarely share a PLC brand. Getting one coherent picture means reading from several different systems without replacing any of them.
Process conditions that move
Speeds, diameters, tensions, bath concentrations and temperatures drift continuously. Quality depends on them, so they have to be recorded continuously, not sampled by hand.
Multi-stage genealogy
Material passes through several processes before it is finished. Tracing a problem means following that chain backward across every stage.
Losses that hide in short stops
On a continuous line, the damaging downtime is often many short stops rather than one long one — invisible unless it is captured automatically.
Where this experience comes from
Our MES runs in production at a tire-reinforcement plant in Central Europe, covering the full process from wire drawing through plating, reading from a mixed estate of controllers and monitoring process conditions at line level as well as machine level. This is the sector our system was built in.
